Disclaimer: RememBear was discontinued for existing users as of July 18, 2023. You can no longer create an account.

RememBear is TunnelBear’s official password manager, which comes in both a free and premium version. You may already know TunnelBear through their excellent VPN service of the same name. In addition to protecting your online activities, this company is also committed to securing and managing your passwords.

The most striking aspect of RememBear is their unique style. All their software, including their website and socials, have a playful theme: bears. The question is whether this password manager is as good as it looks. Is it really such a good idea to “put a bear in your PC”? We think so, even though the password manager does have its drawbacks.

RememBear Review: In a Nutshell

Pros Cons
Cheerful interface with great design Both app and browser extensions required for a good experience
Handy browser extensions Has few extra features
Rock-solid security Sometimes the bear icon doesn’t appear when it should
Supports many operating systems
Good free version

Score bar RememBear filled up to 8,3 out of 10

RememBear is a decent password manager with a nice interface. It stores your passwords and other data and helps you generate secure, unique passwords. However, you shouldn’t expect many extra features from RememBear: they focus mainly on necessary functionality.

The biggest inconvenience we experienced with RememBear was the fact that we had to download two different types of software, namely a desktop app and a separate browser extension. We also had to refresh web pages every now and then to make the RememBear icon appear. This partly detracts from the user-friendliness of this password manager.

Still, the manager is very handy, fast, and fun – especially if you like puns. That, combined with its strong security, makes RememBear a perfect option for anyone looking for a password manager that doesn’t take itself too seriously but puts privacy and online safety first.

In short: if you’re looking for the “simple bare necessities”, RememBear is perfect for you. It’ll allow you to create strong passwords and store them in a fun and safe way. We therefore give RememBear an 8.3/10.

Safety: Is RememBear Safe to Use?

RememBear’s look may seem very playful and funny, but don’t let these bears fool you! RememBear also has its safety in order. We took a closer look at RememBear’s various security features and techniques. These are our findings:

  • RememBear uses strong encryption and special techniques to keep your data safe.
  • Thanks to its use of end-to-end encryption, RememBear can ensure a zero-knowledge policy.
  • Every year RememBear has its software independently audited.
  • RememBear generates secure passwords and supports face and fingerprint IDs.

Encryption and security techniques

RememBear SecurityRememBear uses strong AES-256-encryption, which is considered one of the highest encryption standards in the online security world today.

To enter your RememBear account, you need your Master Password. This one password gives you access to all your other saved passwords.

When setting up your RememBear account, you’ll receive a New Device Key, or NDK. This key is a series of random letters and numbers that are specific to your account. If you want to add a new device to your account, you need this NDK. The combination of master password and NDK protects you from both offline and Brute Force attacks. Your NDK is also used in your Backup Kit, which we will discuss in more detail later.

RememBear uses HTTPS, and adds Transport Layer Encryption on top. This means that, even if the secure HTTPS connection goes down, all your RememBear data will remain secure.

In addition, Amazon Key Management Service (KMS) is used to monitor the encrypted data on RememBear’s servers. Consequently, even if their servers are hacked, the attackers won’t be able to read your data.

Logging and audits

RememBear uses end-to-end encryption to ensure that the contents of your RememBear account are only accessible to you. What does this mean? As soon as you store information in your RememBear account, this information is first encrypted and then sent to RememBear’s servers. Therefore, the team behind RememBear is unable to access your important passwords and credit card details.

In 2017, Cure53 did an audit of RememBear, which showed that the safety of their products was of a high standard. Furthermore, some issues that were identified by the audit were resolved before the beta software launch. RememBear says it carries out independent audits annually, although the last available report from these audits is for 2017.

Security features

In addition to their very solid zero-knowledge policy and strong encryption, RememBear includes a couple of extra security features. For example, RememBear shows how strong each of your passwords are by means of a gradation bar. You also have the option to generate your own secure passwords. This means you can create the strongest passwords and immediately save them, so you don’t have to remember them at all.

The RememBear password manager also supports facial and fingerprint recognition. You can, therefore, also login to RememBear by means of your face or fingerprint ID. However, this is a setting that only works on mobile devices.

Unlike some other password managers, RememBear doesn’t have a system in place which notifies you if there has been a data breach that may have involved your data. While some other managers do offer such a service, RememBear can’t send these types of alerts, as they can’t read your data. As a result, they can’t compare your data with existing data leaks. This indicates that they really put your privacy first.

Ease of Use: How User-Friendly is RememBear?

RememBear is easy to navigate and set up. The software does a very nice job in terms of ease of use. Here are some of our findings about RememBear’s usability and the various features the password manager offers.

  • RememBear’s website and software have a very nice look.
  • Installing RememBear is easy, although you will need to install two different programs.
  • RememBear allows you to save passwords, credit card details and notes.
  • With a few clicks you can quickly and automatically log in to all kinds of websites.
  • RememBear doesn’t have many extra features: it just has a Backup Kit, which is more a part of your overall account security.
  • RememBear has a free version. However, the premium version offers more features.
  • The password manager doesn’t come with a money-back guarantee.
  • RememBear’s customer service works via email and they respond relatively quickly.

Website and installation

The RememBear website is simple and fun. As soon as you access their website, you’re instantly invited to click a button to download their software. RememBear’s trusted cartoon bear also shows up on the homepage, and you’ll find it all over the website and the software.

RememBear Homepage

RememBear has a handy feature: if you use the RememBear browser extension, you will automatically be logged into your account on the website. From there you can see your payment history, and you can update, delete, or download your personal data (in line with the rules of the GDPR).

The installation process for the RememBear desktop app (on Windows) is as follows:

  1. Click “Download Now” on RememBear’s website. A file will immediately be downloaded to your PC.
  2. Select this file and click on “Open file”.
  3. Click on “I Agree” to agree to the terms.
  4. Determine where on your computer you would like to save the software and then click on “Install”. If Windows asks you whether you want to allow RememBear to make changes to your device, click “Yes”. RememBear will then start the installation.
  5. You will be asked to create an account. Fill in the account information and create a strong master password.
  6. Log in and start protecting your passwords with a bear!

Software and features

RememBear supports Mac, Windows, iOS, and Android. Browser extensions are available for Google Chrome, Firefox, and Safari. With RememBear Premium it’s also possible to synchronize your data across various devices. This means that, if you save an account on mobile, you can also access it on your desktop. We have mainly tested RememBear on a Windows PC.

RememBear’s app is easy to use. Under “Logins” you can save and view all your passwords and login details. There is no limit to the number of accounts you can store, just like with Abine Blur password manager. You can also store other kinds of information, in addition to your default usernames and passwords. For example, you can save your credit card details under “Credit Cards” and save notes in “Secure Notes”,  so they can’t be read by anyone else. You might use this for your social security number, for example.

RememBear example of GIF

Under “Achievements”, you’ll find the setup steps you’ve already completed. Here, you’ll have the option to share your experience with others, like telling your friends about the software with one of the GIFs under “Share a Bear”. Under “Add a New Device” you can add other devices using your New Device Key.

Finally, under “Settings”, you can change settings, import data from other apps, control when RememBear asks for your master password, and manage your account.

RememBear browser extensions

In addition to the desktop app, RememBear also provides browser extensions. In practice, you will probably use these more than the desktop app. Within the app you can copy and paste passwords and other data, but the browser extensions also give you the option to autofill passwords in forms.

For example, if you want to log in to your email account, you must first save your password in the password manager. This can be done manually, or by logging in once while the appropriate browser extension is active. After logging in, RememBear asks if you want to save the account login details. Once you’ve done this, you’ll never need to enter this information yourself again. You simply click on the bear that appears next to the input field and choose the correct login details.

Remember Icon in Password Field

Although you still need to click and the fields won’t autofill completely by themselves, you can log in quickly and easily this way. A drawback we found was that the bear icon doesn’t always appear in the correct field. Sometimes you need to reload the page before the bear icon shows so you can use it to log in faster.

Another disadvantage of the RememBear software is that you need to download two separate programs for everything to work properly. Without the desktop app, the browser extension software won’t work. Nonetheless, most people will mainly use a browser extension. This makes the app seem somewhat clumsy and unnecessary.

RememBear’s extra features

Many password managers have additional features that can be useful, such as the inclusion of a secure browser, the ability to share passwords with other accounts, or the provision of a backup system. Unfortunately, RememBear doesn’t have many extra features. For example, other than synchronization across devices, it isn’t possible to share passwords, as is the case with some other password managers that include a business version. Still, RememBear does have a couple of useful extra options.

Feature Explanation
Backup Kit The Backup Kit is not so much an extra feature, rather it ensures that your password manager remains well protected without you being locked out accidentally. This kit holds specific data, namely your email address, master password, and New Device Key. These are the three elements you need to get access to your account. RememBear advises you to write down or print this information and keep it physically safe.
TunnelBear VPN Although RememBear was developed by the same company as TunnelBear VPN, it isn’t yet possible to link accounts on the different services. There is a chance that this may change in the future. For now, however, RememBear doesn’t have a built-in VPN. If you want the protection of a VPN while surfing the internet, you’ll have to find a separate VPN provider.

Price, subscriptions, and payment options

RememBear has two kinds of subscriptions: a free subscription and RememBear Premium. You can download the free version directly from the website. As this version only works on one device at a time, you won’t be able to synchronize your passwords across your various devices (such as your PC and your phone).

RememBear Premium offers more options than the free version: you can enjoy synchronization across all your devices, create a safe backup of your account, and get priority service with customer service. The Premium plan costs $6.00 per month.

RememBear Subscription prices

Payments can only be done via credit card, using either Mastercard, Visa, or American Express. Completely in line with RememBear’s fun theme, they also indicate that they accept payments in “jars of honey.”

As the Premium plan is a monthly subscription, the plan can be canceled once the month is up. Furthermore, since you can try out their service using their free version, RememBear doesn’t offer a money-back guarantee. The possibility of requesting a refund is only available in exceptional circumstances. If this is the case for you, you can arrange this via customer service.

RememBear’s customer service

If you’re experiencing problems with RememBear, you can go to the “Help” section of the RememBear website. Here, a database of articles might help you find the answer to your question. You can also contact customer service directly. To do this, click on “Contact Us” on the Help section of the website. You will be asked to answer a number of questions.

Contact a support Bear RememBear

Check the options that apply to you and briefly describe your problem or question. Enter your email address and click on “Send Message”. You will receive an answer to your question via email shortly after.
